This thread is for playing chess with the other members of the BRB. We will use the
standard rules of chess. To make things interesting, the white pieces will be played by a single person while the black pieces will be played by the entire membership of the BRB. Guests of the BRB are not allowed to play; if you want to play, you must
become a member. When it is black's turn, any member of the BRB may post a move. When it is white's move, only the person playing white may post a move.
You must make moves on your own. No consultation with others (on or off the board) is allowed. Computer programs may not be used to generate or check moves. This game is intended to develop our chess playing abilities, not our abilities to play moves other people or computers tell us to.
Moves will be posted using
algebraic notation in the
PGN format. This is a lot easier than it may sound. Basically, each move for white and black will be written on a single line, and a few comments enclosed in brackets will be at the top of the game. When you make your move, copy the entire game from the previous post, then add your move. By posting the moves this way, it is possible to use a computer chess board (like
WinBoard and XBoard for Windows and Unix systems) to watch the moves and consider your own moves (keep in mind that you must not use the computer to generate or analyze potential moves). To do this, simply select the game with your mouse, copy and paste in into a text file, save the text file with a .PGN extension, then open the .PGN file in your chess viewer. Some chess viewers (like WinBoard) will allow you to paste directly into the viewer without having to save the game as a file.
If you have any questions about the rules, the notation, or the PGN format you may post them in this thread. To keep the thread easy-to-read, I may occasionally move the questions and answers to this post and delete the question from the thread.
I will play the first game as white.
