Ok, so, I've discovered that using a low impedance to hi impedance connector is virtually worthless on my cam.  No decent audio control, and any great distance drastically lowers audio quality.

My only option is an XLR adapter, with some external control.

Right now, I'm considering 3 different types. (though I'm open to others if anybody has recommendations.)

The Canon MA-300, which sits atop the beloved GL2 and XL2, and connects via BNC.  I like it cause it has a holder, and because it doesn't use a mini connector for output.

Unfortunately, it uses BNC, and I'm not too hyped over that one either.

The Beachtek DXA-4, which is designed for my camera specifically, but uses a mini connector.  The price is decent though, and obviously it is designed with my camera in mind...

And the Beachtek DXA-4C, which is virtually the same thing as the DXA-4, but has gold plated RCA connectors, which I am thoroughly more impressed with.  However, I might just be being suspicious of the mini connector on the 4 for no reason.  Also, this was designed for the XL1.

I have almost eliminated the Canon adapter from my mind, unless there is something good about it other than the coolness factor.

The DXA-4C and 4 are both the same price new, but BH is selling a used 4C for 60 bucks off new price.  I'm wondering, should I get the one that was made for my cam, and take the risk of the mini connector being sucky, or should I get the 4C, and take a chance on it not being perfect for my Cam?

Opinions?  Olives?  Pickles?

Funk will undoubtedly have an opinion.  Well do ya, Funk?  /Dirty harry.

I actually don't.  Audio's not my strong point, I usually leave it to Mike.  Mike's mics, I call them.

Mike's mics.

Yeah.

lol.

So, I've not found many reviews, but I did some testing with my cam and discovered a very sick thing.

Whenever I plug anything into the mini-jack, it makes a hiss.  A loud one.

BUT, when I plug something into the RCA jacks on the side, no hiss.  Much better audio, really.

Which makes me wonder, would the powered XLR controller hiss, or not?

Hmm....

I'm sure the DXA-4C won't, but I'm not too sure about the DXA-4.  The problem is, the DXA-4 is designed to fit the bottom of my cam perfectly, unlike the 4C which is for the XL1.

I think I'll just get the 4C.  I don't care if I have to put it on with ducttape, I'm going to have good audio quality.

Or, I could just record to a DAT.  My Dad has a DAT machine with an XLR converter.

I just didn't want the hassle of one more machine.

Forget the MA-300, it's awful. Beachtek makes a good product, but the one I'd recommend is the XLR-PRO from (I think) Verisign. I have it, use it, love it, and have yet to have any problems.

Balanced mini is better than unblanced RCA.

Well, you must understand that I have the absolute worst mini connector in the world on my cam, and it causes a hiss and crackle in the audio.  Maybe it got wet, I don't know.

All I know is, I likses the RCA audio on my cam way betta dan da mini.  Not to mention, its a better connection.

Maybe I should take my cam to a shop and get it checked out...
