Lighting Setups

Ok, I have decided that I'm going to periodically take production photos of my lighting setups just to have a reference and to let others see and possibly learn from them.

Without further adieu...


In this picture, Theo and Marion are setting up the backlight to seperate Ryan and his set from the backdrop. We used a 750W lamp with a peach gel on it. As you can see, we merely had it sit on the light kit itself.


In this one, you can see Ryan has a slightly dimmed down 500 W backlight. His keylight is a high up 1000W lamp flooded out and undimmed with a blue gel on it. He has a magenta gel 750W on him as a compliment to his other side light which is a 1000 W dimmed down green gel.


Ok...sorry that the camera freaked and didn't focus (damn digital cameras with all auto functions). But this shows you a little more perspective of the setup.

Here is Marion getting a foot pedal shot of the bass drum.


Here is Marion getting a vibration shot of the bass drum. More of the setup is seen.

The only light not seen here is the key light for his set. It was a dimmed down 1000W light with no gels to illuminate his drums for a lot of the shots.


Well, that's about all I have for you now. I'll try to keep this updated as I create more lighting setups.

Well since my latest post goes unnoticed...I'll just bump this one with some more info and pics.



Here is theo again, playing the unsuspecting gay basher. Center stage is the director of this production, Ben. Stage right is Trey, playing the overconfident gay cowboy. the production was named Brokeback Studio.


From this shot you can see the strong blue gel 1000 W lamp from stage left as Theo's keylight. From behind the flats (barn doors?) is a 500 W light throwing off incandescant light to backlight the gay cowboy. Theo's fill is again a lesser powerful blue gel lamp. He also have another fill that reflects off the ceiling through a blue gel. the effect the director was aiming for was that of night.


Here's Ryan doing the sound and here you can see Theo's main fill light. Also notice the ladder, this later plays an integral role.

Ok...so they wanted to try different people as the gay man. I too wentt up, but luckily for me...no one took any pictures.

Not true for my buddy Derek.


He looks like such an uncomfortable gay man.


He goes in for the kill.

Notice how the lights don't react the same way to Derek as they did Trey? His skin tone is considerably darker than Trey's, and as such, the lights are not as nearly powerful on him as they should be.


Derek goes down!

Does it look lighter on the studio cameras?

Much so...this is just my camera operating with no flash. I didn't want to distract the actors and the crew with my stills.
